At one time, concerts featuring Veene Doreswamy Iyengar and Mysore T Chowdiah had become extremely popular. Both of them were among the finest maestros of their instruments – Veene and Violin. I attended one of their concerts held at the Maharaja’s College Centenary Hall, in Mysore. It was an excellent concert.
Chowdiah was about 25 years senior to Doreswamy Iyengar who treated Chowdiah with great respect. Nearing the end of the concert, after a few tukdas, Doreswamy Iyengar asked the older gentleman permission to conclude the concert. Chowdiah retorted in mock anger, but with unconcealed affection, “ಏನಯ್ಯಾ! ನಂಗೆ ವಯಸ್ಸಾಯ್ತು ಅಂತ ಮುಗಿಸ್ಬಿಡೋಣ ಅಂತಿದ್ಯಾ? ಅದೆಷ್ಟು ಹೊತ್ತು ನುಡಿಸ್ತೀಯೊ ನುಡ್ಸು, ನೋಡೋಣ!” (What I say! You are talking of concluding because I am old? Let me see how long you can play!”) Doreswamy Iyengar apologised and they played a couple of more pieces and Chowdiah magnanimously permitted Doreswamy Iyengar to end the concert.
It was such a pleasure to watch the mutual respect, admiration, and the bonhomie they shared.
