20 The Briefest of Interruptions.

If you stumbled upon this post, reading this introduction might help

It was the Ramanavami music season in Mysore. There was a concert by N Ramani at the Ayyanar’s College of Music. The venue is known more popularly as Bidaram Krishnappa’s Rama Mandira. Many Mysoreans may not even recognise the first mentioned name. Ramani was at the height of his career and the hall was full long before the concert.

The music was in full flow when a house gecko fell on Ramani from the rood of the hall. He was flustered and jumped up and all the others on the small stage also jumped up. The gecko scurried away more scared than the musicians. Within seconds Ramani sat back. The accompanists were still standing and laughing and seemed in no hurry to resume.

Ramani on the other hand shushed his fellow musicians and waved at them to sit down with an angry face and resumed playing making the interruption as short as possible. The accompanists sat down sheepishly in a hurry then and started. By that time Ramani had already played one cycle of the tala of whatever he was playing.

He earned a lot of respect from the elderly musicians and connoisseurs sitting right in front of the stage.
